Glossary

Installation type

What this term means when it appears on an appliance specification or energy label.

In short

Whether the appliance is freestanding, built-in (fully integrated behind a furniture door) or built-under (fits under a worktop with its own front).

Freestanding machines stand on their own and are the most common in the UK. Integrated machines have a furniture door fixed to the front and need the kitchen cabinet to match; they are not interchangeable with freestanding models, so check the installation type before replacing like for like. Dimensions for integrated models are for the appliance without the furniture door.
